The short answer
Two causes dominate here: manganese deficiency (new growth comes in yellow and frizzled, known as frizzle top) and Asian cycad scale (a white crust that yellows the whole plant). Both are treatable if caught early, and both get much worse if ignored. Yellowing of just the oldest bottom leaves, with a healthy green crown, is often normal aging.

First, find which pattern you have
- New top growth yellow or frizzled → manganese deficiency. The classic sago problem in alkaline coastal soil. The fronds that emerged damaged never green up again, but treatment protects every flush after this one.
- White crusty coating, then yellowing → cycad scale. Check the leaf undersides and trunk. This pest killed enormous numbers of Florida sagos and still circulates on the Gulf Coast. It spreads plant-to-plant on the wind, so a bad infestation on one sago threatens others nearby.
- Bottom ring yellow, crown healthy → likely normal aging, possibly accelerated by nitrogen hunger or drought stress. Least urgent pattern.
- All-over pale yellow → water or root trouble. Sagos hate wet feet; one inside a daily irrigation zone or a poorly drained bed can slowly suffocate.
Why sagos struggle in Sarasota-area yards
Sagos are tough, drought-adapted cycads, but our conditions work against them: alkaline sand starves them of manganese, summer irrigation keeps their roots wetter than they like, and cycad scale pressure in the region is constant. A sago can also look fine for a year while a problem builds, because sagos decline slowly and recover slowly.
Worth saving? Almost always yes
Mature sagos are slow-growing and expensive to replace; a large specimen runs hundreds to thousands of dollars. Both major causes of yellowing are very treatable when caught before the crown is lost, so a quick diagnosis is money well spent. Photograph the crown and the leaf undersides and send them over.

The yellowing started right after the sago put out new growth. Why?
That timing points to manganese deficiency. Sagos pull heavily on manganese to build a new flush of leaves, and our alkaline sandy soil locks manganese away. The new leaves emerge yellow or frizzled ("frizzle top") while the flush drains reserves. Treated early with manganese sulfate it is very recoverable; ignored, the sago declines from the crown down.
There is a white crust on the underside of the leaves. Is that related?
Very likely. That is the signature of cycad scale, an armored scale insect that devastates sagos in Florida. Heavy infestations turn fronds yellow, then brown, and can kill the plant. Only the bottom ring of leaves is yellow. Should I worry?
Older sago leaves yellowing and browning gradually while the crown stays deep green is often natural senescence: the plant retiring its oldest ring of leaves. Worry when yellowing hits the newest growth, moves fast, or comes with the white scale crust. When in doubt, a photo is enough for a first read.
Can I cut the yellow leaves off my sago?
Fully brown, dead leaves can go. Yellow but living leaves are better left on, especially if the cause is a nutrient deficiency, because the plant is still drawing from them. Always wear gloves and keep sago material away from dogs: every part of a sago is toxic if chewed.
