Home base, and what that actually gets you

Nokomis is where I live and work from, so this is the one page on the site where I can promise speed without qualifying it. Same-week bookings are routine, next-day is frequently possible, and no address in Nokomis, Laurel, or Casey Key comes anywhere near the twenty-mile line where a travel surcharge would apply.

That matters more than it sounds. Most of the houseplant problems that are genuinely urgent, such as a stem gone soft with root rot or a mite population moving from one plant to the next along a shelf, are ones where the difference between this week and next month is the difference between a repot and a replacement.

Three very different indoor environments in a few miles

Nokomis packs a surprising range into a small area, and the houses tell you which one they are in.

Casey Key homes are the extreme end. A narrow barrier island with the Gulf on one side and Little Sarasota Bay on the other means salt aerosol from two directions, and screen enclosures stop mosquitoes without stopping any of it. Indoor plants are fine; lanai collections are not, unless they are chosen for it. Half of what I get called about on the key is salt burn being treated as a watering fault. Older key houses also tend to be low, deep-eaved, and shaded, which means interior light is far lower than the bright coastal setting suggests.

The Dona Bay and Shakett Creek waterfront gets brackish influence and hard afternoon light bouncing off the water. That is a great environment for a succulent shelf near the slider and a punishing one for anything with a thin leaf.

Mainland Nokomis and Laurel, out toward Albee Farm Road and the interstate, are the most conventional: normal Florida houses with normal Florida problems, which means the air conditioning is the main driver of everything. That is where I see the standard cluster of brown tips and crispy calatheas.

The one thing I fix most in Nokomis houses

Cachepots without drainage holes. It is the same everywhere, but in older Nokomis houses with tile floors it is close to universal, because nobody wants a saucer dripping on terracotta tile. So the nursery pot goes into a beautiful ceramic container with no hole, an inch of water sits invisibly in the bottom after every watering, and six months later I am looking at a plant with yellowing leaves and roots that slide out of their own skins.

The fix costs nothing: lift the plant out, water it at the sink, let it drain completely, and put it back into a dry cachepot. I check every pot in the house on a first visit for exactly this.

Seasonal households

A good share of Nokomis and Casey Key is seasonal, and being minutes away makes the absentee arrangement work properly. For clients who leave for months, the routine is a pre-departure visit that groups everything for humidity, pulls plants back from the glass, sets up wicking where it makes sense, and moves anything vulnerable off the lanai, and then scheduled check-ins through the maintenance side while you are gone. Coming home to a collection that looks the way you left it is most of what the Canopy membership is for.

What a Nokomis visit looks like

We walk the house together, room by room, including the lanai. I check light where each plant actually stands rather than guessing from the window, check roots and pots on anything struggling, identify what you have, and flag anything that is a problem for a pet. Plant ID is a bigger part of these visits than people expect. Within 48 hours you get a written plan: what goes where, what to water how, what to treat, and what to stop doing. A follow-up call a week later checks it is working.

If the yard comes up while we are out there, it usually does, and I am happy to look at a yellowing palm while I am standing next to it. But the work here is the inside of the house.
